Creative writing tutor Joan Burke has won the City of Monash’s first senior of the year award. Ms Burke, who has been volunteering at Waverley Community Learning Centre for 20 years, was recognised for inspiring senior citizens to write and have their work published. Ms Burke runs regular creative writing classes and a writers’ support group that meets fortnightly. “My philosophy is that it is better to wear out than rust out,” she said.
