FOR over half a century, they've enthralled residents and students with their music and this weekend will be no different for the Monash University Choral Society.
The society will be marking its 50th anniversary with a special show in South Yarra this Saturday after a stellar year of performances.
The society's Ella Webb says the gala concert, at the Melbourne High School memorial hall, will feature pieces like Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, widely regarded as one of the most popular pieces of choral music ever composed.
The society started in 1962 and has more than 100 members on its books. On a good week, rehearsals have up to 60 members, some of whom are the second generation in their family to be part of the group.
"We're all very, very close," Ms Webb says.
"Every night after rehearsal we go to the pub and if we're not going to the pub, we're going to someone's place for coffee. It's just a wonderful place and a wonderful society to be a part of."
Ms Webb joined the choir in late 2010 out of a love for music.
"I actually had never really sung in a choir previously but I've always liked the idea.
"I went along just to have a look and I was absolutely blown away.
"I found listening to the harmonies of the basses and tenors unbelievably beautiful."
