EXCLUSIVE: THE body of a Monash University student who died in his room earlier this year lay undiscovered for several days.
The student, who was studying medicine, died in May in Briggs Hall, a residence on the Clayton campus which can accommodate up to 300 students.
Police have confirmed the body of the young man, from Darwin, was discovered on May 14.
They say there were indications he had been dead for a ‘‘period of time’’ before the body was found.
The student, who the Weekly has chosen not to name, was found on his bed. It’s believed his death was sudden.
It’s also believed that the body had to be wheeled out on a stretcher in front of other students who were living in Briggs and Jackomos halls.
Together, the halls can accommodate up to 600 people.
Under Victoria’s Residential Tenancy Act, a landlord or their agent can only enter a rented premises — such as a room in Briggs Hall — at a time agreed to by the tenant.
Monash University spokeswoman Stacey Mair said that under the Residential Tenancy Act, ‘‘Monash University staff must abide by strict rules for entry of premises. These rules were followed at the family’s instruction and Victoria Police were involved’’.
‘‘All residential services staff at Monash University are trained to deal with a variety of welfare issues and critical incident management protocols are in place for dealing with situations such as this one.’’
Because of an ongoing investigation by the coroner, Ms Mair declined to to confirm how the student was found.
Victoria Police and Monash University have confirmed that an inquest is under way.
