IT'S a photo of someone's mother or sister but Mike Pond has taken it upon himself to reunite the lost picture with its owner.
Mr Pond and his wife Jenny were in Waverley Gardens in Mulgrave about two months ago when they saw the photo lying forlornly on a bench near the shopping centre's internet booths. There was no one nearby.
"I felt a bit sorry for the person who had lost it," the 72 year old remembers.
The photo features the image of a woman with olive skin staring directly into the lens. She has short hair and a patterned top.
"It's an old photo with serrated edges. It looks to me like it could've been taken quite a few years ago," Mr Pond says.
"It looks like it's possibly a memory, somebody's mother.
"She could be around about 40 or 50. I think she's probably foreign and I thought, if it was me losing it, I'd like to have it back because you treasure these memories."
The photo has several creases and has been well-loved. "It looks as though someone has treasured it dearly. It's been in somebody's wallet for a long time."
Mr Pond took the photo to centre management and handed it in but he couldn't stop thinking about it.
About three weeks later, he found himself at Waverley Gardens again and learned that the photo remained unclaimed.
He decided to find the owner himself.
This was two months ago but he's since had no luck with his own investigations so he contacted Weekly in the hope that someone would recognise the photo.
"It's hard to replace them, especially if you haven't got another. I just thought it'd be a nice thing to do.
"If it was mine, I would've liked to think somebody would've done a similar thing for me."
