Glen Waverley: Springvale Road tops nation's worst crash spot

A CRASH occurred on Springvale Road in Glen Waverley almost every second day last year, making it the worst crash spot in Australia.

Latest statistics released today by car insurer AAMI found that in 2011-12, drivers claimed 207 crashes on Springvale Road, topping the list of accident sites in the country.

It was closely followed by Plenty Road in Bundoora, Bell Street in Preston and Princes Highway in Dandenong.

About a third of the drivers surveyed in the 2012 AAMI Crash Index said carelessness was a contributing factor to a crash, while about a third blamed distraction.

AAMI spokesman Reuben Aitchinson said the hotspots identified had high speed limits and a lot of traffic.

‘‘A moment’s lapse in concentration or judgment, or letting your impatience get the better of you can easily lead to a crash. Best case scenario you have a fender bender, but unfortunately we also see far worse,’’ he said.

“More than half of the drivers surveyed felt that tougher penalties and mandatory safe driving courses would bring down the number of crashes on our roads.”
