POLICE are hunting for a firebug responsible for starting 16 fires between Oakleigh and Huntingdale over the past two years, some as recent as last Saturday week.
Eight blazes have been set along the Cranbourne and Pakenham railway line between Huntingdale and Oakleigh this fire season, most during January.
The most recent fires were started about dawn on the weekend of February 16-17.
Detectives from the Monash crime investigation unit believe the fires are linked to the same person. Leading Senior Constable Julie Rushton said police became involved after getting reports from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. "They're all quite minor, sometimes they're only a patch of grass that's about a metre square burnt." .
But during one incident a tree caught fire.
Leading Senior Constable Rushton called on residents with any information to come forward.
"If they see anything suspicious in that area, particularly on Saturday or Sunday mornings, which is when they've been occurring, we'd certainly like to know about it."
