Fevola dominates with 11 goals

FORMER AFL star Brendan Fevola booted 11 goals for Casey yesterday in its 77-point win over Frankston at Frankston Park.

Fevola's goals came in surges when he played deep in the forward line, something he has not been able to do in recent weeks because of Casey's game plan to send him further up the ground.

Casey, aligned with Melbourne, has been torn between developing the young Demon forwards and winning matches for Casey.

But yesterday Fevola was let off the leash.

Casey general manager Brian Woodman believes a dominant game from Fevola was brewing after an impressive match last week.

"Last week he didn't kick a lot of goals but played a really strong game for us and this was exactly the same today," Woodman said. "I still think AFL people will make a decision not only on how he plays now but also what he's capable of and they know that. I think most of them have seen him play. I think [today] it will spark a thought process."

Woodman also confidently spoke about how Fevola was in a "good space" off the field; one of the key factors of being re-drafted after a series of off-field dramas at Carlton and the Brisbane Lions.

Midfielders Jordan Lewis, Clinton Young and Rick Ladson may be in line for a recall for Hawthorn's clash against Melbourne on Sunday after all three impressed in Box Hill's 11-point loss to North Ballarat yesterday.

But Cameron Bruce, who was named to return from a knee injury, was a late withdrawal and is expected to spend the next fortnight at Box Hill before returning to the AFL.

Hawthorn development coach Damian Carroll, also the Box Hill mentor, said Ryan Schoenmakers was likely to return in the VFL next week but ruckman Brent Renouf remains in doubt to return this season after a gall bladder operation.

The Hawks let the Roosters off the hook in the third term yesterday and trailed by 20 points at the final break. Among that charge was North's Lindsay Thomas, who shrugged off a sluggish first half to finish with three goals.

Roosters coach Gerard FitzGerald was pleased for Thomas.

"I just reminded him that he hadn't played many games with us over the last few years and the reason was that he has been a very, very good AFL player," FitzGerald said. "But I also did remind him that when he did play with us in his very early days, he was outstanding.''

Cameron Richardson, Daniel Pratt and Liam Hoy were among the best for the Roosters, who have consolidated a top-four spot and appear to be on the charge again despite many off-season changes.

"Every one of the coaches is in a different position this year so there's been a significant amount of changes and we've had to adapt and look forward, not back," FitzGerald said.

In yesterday's other match, Brett Goodes led Williamstown to a 32-point win over Collingwood.

The Seagulls will take on Claremont in the Foxtel Cup grand final on August 6 following Claremont's 16-point win over Port Adelaide Magpies on Saturday night.
