Rudd announces $30.9b funding takeover of public hospitals

03 Mar, 2010 11:39 AM
The Rudd Government has finally announced its plan to fix Australia's public hospitals, with a $30.9 billion funding takeover as its centrepiece.

The giant health and hospital reform program will result in the Commonwealth funding up to 60 per cent of all services, infrastructure and research costs in public hospitals.

New 'Local Hospital Networks' will pay for services, replacing the traditional model of Commonwealth grants to the states and territories.

The Government will also establish an independent authority to calculate the amount hospitals are paid for each service they provide.

In a press release, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Treasurer Wayne Swan and Health Minister Nicola Roxon called the reforms 'the biggest changes to Australia's health and hospital system since the introduction of Medicare, and one of the most significant reforms to the federation in its history.”

The government will fund the reforms by redirecting one third of the GST revenue currently paid directly to the states and territories, to health and hospitals.

Prime Minister Rudd has also promised a new national health network to bring together the eight state run systems under one set of 'tough' national standards, but says hospitals will be run locally in small groups with local professions given added powers.

Too little, too late. Kevin Rudd promised at the last election to force a Health system takeover by mid-2009 if the states didn't fix it. He got all the headlines (and votes, including mine) and we were fooled into believing he could do it. We were fooled once. Shame on you. We won't be fooled twice...bring on the election !

Ding Dong, the wicked HNEAHS is dead, within the next 2 years. Tamworth and surrounding rural hospitals have suffered due to the lack of funds from Newcastle. Jobs have disappeared, pt's and staff food is cooked and frozen in the Hunter, as only hunter businesses can be supplied with contracts. Finally, decisions will be made to suit people living in Tamworth. Newcastle constantly makes changes to staff conditions, to suit workers in Newcastle, but could not care less how it affects staff and pt's living in rural NSW. No major contracts are allowed from the New England region, due to the new health reform, not only will that means our hospital will have the proper funding, but money will again be spent in our community, from food services to proper maintenance around the hospital. Thank you, Prime Minister. Concerned Tamworth Registered Nurse.

Hospitals have been in crisis for far too long. Deprived of funding they are barely subsisting. Originally revenue from lotteries was intended for our hospitals but the NSW govenment has offloaded that income despite it being a profit making concern. The track record of state run hospitals is appaling. Without some sort of intervention our hospitals will implode. Hopefully the measures being introduced by the Federal Government will relieve some of the pain. It remains to be seen.
