Wheelchair tennis event rated a smash hit

23 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
NOTTING Hill Pinewood Tennis Club in Glen Waverley has added to the Monash area's reputation for hosting major tennis tournaments after a successful end to the ITP Wheelchair Tennis tour's Melbourne Open last Wednesday.

Notting Hill president John Basemore said his club received excellent feedback from administrators and players following the event, which had a record number of entries.

The Glen Iris Valley Recreation Club hosted a Fed Cup tie between Australia and Ukraine last year.

Basemore said the experience of hosting the Open was a highlight for the club and its volunteers.

"The athletes were an absolute pleasure to have around the club. This event was possibly the most rewarding event I've been connected with," Basemore said.

"It was very humbling to get these world-class athletes at our club."

Basemore said a high percentage of the field came from overseas for the event, with many of the athletes chasing not only wins but points towards qualification for the London Paralympics. France's Michael Jeremiasz, the world number 12, won the men's Open, beating world number 4 Ronald Vink from the Netherlands.

Vink had a series of match points in a thrilling final set tie-break, but Jeremiasz just managed to hold on to stretch his unbeaten 2012 record to 12 matches after sealing a 1-6 6-2 7-6(7) win.

Vink injured himself late in the final, which meant he could not play with compatriot Tom Egberink in the men's doubles final, forcing their withdrawal and giving the title to Britain's Marc McCarroll and Gordon Reid.

No. 1 women's seed Esther Vergeer from the Netherlands took the women's singles final with a 6-0 6-0 win over fellow Dutchwoman and world No. 2 Aniek van Koot.

There was British success again in the women's doubles as third seeds Louise Hunt and Jordanne Whiley had a three-set win over Japanese top seeds Yui Kamiji and Yuko Okabe.

World No. 6 and top seed Jamie Burdekin beat South Africa's Lucas Sithole 6-3 6-4 in the men's quad final.
