WHEN Queensland jockey Brent Evans was given a chance to join the racing fraternity at Cranbourne, he jumped at it.
Through his Queensland horse racing connections, the multiple cup winner secured an apprenticeship with Cranbourne trainer Michael Kent.
He's been in Cranbourne for only a month and has already proved himself on the race track with a win at Caulfield on Tartiva. He also recently won three races at Sandown on the back of Florina.
"So far Cranbourne has been good. I'm here for four years and hoping to get heaps of rides.
"Hopefully I'll be a success in Melbourne - riding in the Melbourne Cup race is the ultimate goal."
It seems Evans is on the way to forging a successful racing career, with more than half a dozen favorite mounts on his list.
"A firm favorite is Cheakbetdze. I rode her three times and won all three races.
"That race at the Gold Coast Guinness was one of my highlights. I'd like to ride her again, but haven't seen her again on the tracks.
"Another highlight was riding in the Ipswich Eyeliner Stakes on Mittani. Tisani-Boy is another favourite. I rode him eight times and won seven races."
Evans said confidence was a jockey's major asset.
"It is a big factor - and to keep a level head and make the right decisions. The biggest challenge a jockey faces is the weight.
"You have to watch your weight, lose weight if you need to - and always keep your trainer happy."
Evans will be riding at Geelong on Friday and at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
