Cummings views cup double

19 Oct, 2009 09:54 AM
OCTOGENERIAN trainer Bart Cummings continued his dominance of Australia's major racing cups when Viewed impressively won Saturday's $2,555,000 Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup.

He is now favourite to win his 13th Melbourne Cup at Flemington.

Viewed, the 2008 Melbourne Cup winner, provided 81-year-old Cummings (he turns 82 on November 14) with his seventh BMW Caulfield Cup win.

He previously won with Galilee (1966), Big Philou (1969), Leilani (1974), Ming Dynasty (1977 and 1980) and Let's Elope (1991).

He also produced the quinella when AJC Derby winner Roman Emperor finished two-lengths behind, a half-length ahead of third place-getter Vigor. It is the second time Cummings has produced the quinella, having trained Hyperno when second to Ming Dynasty in 1980.

He had three runners in the race, with Allez Wonder running a handy eighth.

Viewed became only the third horse in the 132-year history of the Caulfield Cup to win after winning the Melbourne Cup.

The others were Skipton (Melbourne Cup 1941, Caulfield Cup 1943) and Rising Fast (Melbourne Cup 1954 and Caulfield Cup 1955). Rising Fast had also won the Caulfield Cup in 1954.

For winning jockey Brad Rawiller, it showed what a difference a year makes. Last year, in his first Caulfield Cup appearance, he rode the much-favoured Weekend Hussler, who finished a disappointing 12th.

This year he was seen at his best, never leaving the rail to come through the field from near last to score running away.

"I hadn't spent a penny," Rawiller said. "I knew the horse was going to be strong to the line so I was pretty confident on the turn. When you get a run like that, you virtually save 10 lengths in 100 metres, so it was a good result. And thankfully the horse did the job."

The internationals disappointed, with Kirklees running seventh and Cima De Triomphe 13th after being trapped wide.

Good Melbourne Cup trials came from Daffodil (fourth), Fiumicino (fifth), Master O'Reilly (sixth), Zavite (ninth) and Harris Tweed (10th).

Attention now turns to Saturday's $3,050,000 group 1 Tatts Cox Plate (2040 metres) at Moonee Valley and once again it will be a classic affair.

Last year's The Age Caulfield Guineas winner, Whobegotyou, is in great form and looks the one to beat. Other chances are Heart of Dreams (the 2007 winner), El Segundo, Scenic Shot, Nom Du Jeu, Speed Gifted and So You Think.

The Spring Racing Carnival concludes on November 14 with the group 2 $351,000 TMB Printing Sandown Classic.
