School captain thrives in team atmosphere

27 Oct, 2008 10:21 AM
GLEN Waverley youngster Sam Wheeler is a sport of all sorts, enjoying success in soccer, basketball, cricket, athletics and cross-country running.

It's not surprising that the 12yearold is also the sports

captain at Highvale Primary School.

Wheeler made it to the state championships in cross country this year, but bowed out to compete in a soccer round robin.

He migrated with his family from England.

"My dad brought me up in England playing sport," he said.

Wheeler was named player of the season at the Glen Waverley Cricket Club after taking a hat-trick.

Earlier this year, he qualified for a district basketball team, a zone soccer team and the zone finals in athletics.

Wheeler said his favourite part of sport was hanging out with his teammates.

"I think it's really good that instead of doing individual sports like golf and tennis, if you play for team sports you find you make new friends."
