HAWTHORN-Monash University batsmen had a day out scoring 1281 runs in their respective games against Casey-South Melbourne on Saturday.

Stand-out performances came from thirds batsman Simo Ivetic with 163 in a total of 8-398, Gaurav Kapoor 125 and Adam Slack 101 not out in a total of 8-367 for the seconds.

The firsts batted for a further six overs, progressing from the overnight total of 7-344 to 9-369 declared.

Ben Cookson (68) was the first out caught behind for a career high score and an eighth-wicket partnership with Darren Dewar (112).

Dewar remained unbeaten on 48 in an innings of significant promise for the future.

All the Hawks wickets fell to pace bowlers and the strategic inclusion of Dewar to partner Matthew Hewat as the extra spinner at this stage was possibly questionable.

Michael Rengarajah (1-27) opened with the early wicket caught in slips by Spoljaric. However, from there the tempo of the game accelerated as Casey import from Hampshire, Chris Benham, began smashing boundaries to all parts and taking advantage of the lightning fast outfield.

At lunch the score had raced to 1-111 from 21 overs but it was Rod Bird (3-68) after the break that found the edge of Benham to be caught in slips again by Spoljaric.

This was quickly followed by a wicket to Stallworthy (1-30) that had Casey on 3-132.

Hewat (2-52), the competition's leading spinner, settled into his role working in tandem with the left armer Dewar (1-69), who was proving dangerous with his turn and bounce.

Casey scored 77 off 17 overs after tea as the Hawks persisted with rotations to find a breakthrough.

Hewat returned to the attack with immediate effect, having the catch taken by Tormey at mid-wicket. It was the second catch of four taken by Tormey.

The new ball was taken which proved a turning point, with Rod Bird and Spoljaric taking control and bowling out Casey for 348.

The win places the Hawks just outside the top eight. They next have a critical game against North Melbourne.

The seconds resumed at 0-30, chasing 246.

Sam Miller (32) and Gaurav Kapoor (125) started at a frenetic pace in the Hawks' final score of 8-367.

The thirds resumed at 1-69 and a 125-run partnership between Gunatillake (66) and Hocking (22no) secured the Hawks a win and they are now second on the ladder.
