MAZENOD College student Dimitar Mitkov represented Australia at an Asian football festival last month.
Fifteen-year-old Mitkov helped the Australian team win six out of eight matches at the Asian Football Confederation under-13 boys Festival of Football in Malaysia in June.
Mitkov said it was a great experience to compete against players from other countries.
"The discipline overseas is really high. Before matches, some of the countries would bow as a sign of respect to the opposing team."
Mitkov, who plays midfield, became interested in soccer because his father used to play with a local
team.
Mitkov called the sport a "way of life".
"It's a way to express yourself and enjoy yourself when you're out on the field with your mates."
Mitkov trains every day and says the mental element of the game is just as important as keeping fit.
"I try to do my best to trick them when they go in hard. I'll make them think they can get the ball when they can't."
Victorian under-13 boys head coach Michael Pichner said he was not surprised by Australia's victory at the football tournament.
"It's a testament to the boys and their ability. Technically and tactically they're very good. The challenge is there for them."
Mitkov has been chosen as this week's Journal Sports Star of the Week. If you know of a potential sports star, contact us at 92387777 or email monashjournal@fairfaxmedia.com.au
