Silken skills put Sam in a class apart

27 Apr, 2009 12:00 AM
WELLINGTON Secondary College student Sam Alexander is ranked No.1 in an Australia and New Zealand-wide school soccer program.

He is among 88 students taking part at WSC in a soccer-themed Nike boot camp. As part of the program, students undergo fitness testing and skill drills.

During pre-testing, Alexander was ranked No1 in Australia and New Zealand in four tests.

Alexander, 17, who plays in the seniors at Glen Waverley Soccer Club, said he was passionate about the sport and trains twice a week, as well as playing every day at school during lunchtime.

"I just love the speed of the game and the skill that's involved. It's a beautiful game, pretty to watch."

WSC sport and fitness director Greg Whyte said Alexander wasn't only a talent at school: his overall fitness and basketball skills were also at a high level for his age.
