Season ends for Cannons

17 Aug, 2009 11:08 AM
THE 2009 Victorian Premier League season has had its fair share of ups and downs for the Oakleigh Cannons, with the last game of the season embracing the extremes of both.

A second-half goal from Bonel Obradovic was enough to give the Cannons the points against Hume City on Saturday afternoon, but not enough to snatch the club a place in the finals.

It was the final home and away game of the season and the Cannons' second consecutive win, a rarity this season.

But the Cannons, a finals regular for many seasons, will finish the season four points out of the finals series. The Dandenong Thunder finish on top and Altona is second, followed by Green Gully, Hume City and South Melbourne.

With the finals series out of reach, Cannons' coach John Anastasiadis

continued to play young players, as he had in the mid-week defeat of Altona.

Nicholas Kokolakis came on the second half and did enough to show he has a bright future.

Obradovic's goal came in the final minutes of a game that was dominated by a gusty wind.

After kicking with the wind in the first half, the Cannons continually saw the ball sail back over their heads in the second period, until Obradovic tried a hopeful shot in a calmer moment.

His effort looked to be going well over until the wind took it and it dropped into the top corner.

Pride and passion finally came out to play at the Jack Edwards Reserve on Wednesday night when the Cannons rounded off their Premier League season with a 1-0 defeat of Altona at George Andrews Reserve, arguably their best home performance of the season.

After losing 4-1 to Green Gully on Sunday week, a loss which effectively ended their hopes of playing in the finals, the Cannons blooded a host of new youngsters against Altona and looked much better.

They had pace from midfield and always worried the Altona defence, never more so than in the 55th minute when a quick break led to a corner and Felix Roshman bobbed up to head home inside the far post.

A desperate Altona, for whom the loss could be the difference between playing in the finals series or not, tried all it knew to break down the Cannons' defence, but it held firm.

The round 19 game was played on Wednesday after being postponed on Friday, July 24 when Monash Council dressed the pitch with fertiliser only hours before that match was due to be played.
