THE Oakleigh Cannons were stung into baring their teeth by Northcote City on Friday night at the George Andrews Reserve.
The Cannons notched their first win of the new season, 2-1, after being a goal behind in the opening two minutes. But coach John Anastasiadis believes there is plenty of room for improvement.
Though the Cannons took the points courtesy of two Jerry Karpeh strikes, one in each half, Anastasiadis was disappointed with the way the team played in the second half, conceding that a draw "would probably have been a fair result."
This Saturday the Cannons will meet Green Gully and Anastasiadis is looking for "an improvement of 60per cent or more".
"That's how much I think we can improve. I felt our performance was not up to scratch. I felt it took us too long to get into the game and it was not until we changed the formation from 3-4-3 to 4-4-2 that we began to look better."
The change came after Northcote's Ahmet Turer latched onto a superb through ball to give Cannons' stand-in keeper Scott Agustin little hope.
The strike took the Cannons faithful by surprise and it was not until Jerry Karpeh turned quickly and left the City defence in his wake in the 45th minute that they began to find voice. Karpeh had had the ball in the net twice before only to see the efforts disallowed, one for a foul and the other for offside.
Twenty-five minutes into the second half, Karpeh, who looked sharp all night, was in the right spot again to run onto a ball outside the area and score.
Worryingly though, he came off towards the end of the game limping slightly, with an Achilles strain that officials will have checked out this week, though Anastasiadis thought there was not too much to worry about.
