SMILES and scowls were evenly split between Oakleigh Cannons coach John Anastasiadis and his Bentleigh Greens counterpart Goran Lozanovski after their Premier League clash ended in a 2-2 draw on Friday night.
Both sides had chances to win and both recognised they could have been the loser.
But after a 1-1 draw when they first met in round 1, a further draw at the start of the second stage of the season seemed a fair result.
Cannons fans have become accustomed to the side's slow start and propensity to give away early goals.
On Friday night at the Kingston Heath Soccer Complex the league leaders managed to keep a clean sheet through the first stages but then never got out of first gear.
The Greens took full advantage, scoring twice through Dean Piemonte and Alex Rojas.
But Oakleigh found its mojo at half-time, reducing the deficit quickly when John Fitzgerald headed in after a goal-mouth scramble. A few minutes later Michael Curcija volleyed home a cross.
Anastasiadis said he was happy to take a point but disappointed it wasn't all three. "We were slow to start and at half-time I just told the group that if they were as good as they thought then they had to show character and endeavour to get back into the game. To their credit that's what they did."
