A FLU-struck Oakleigh Cannons achieved on Saturday what no other club has been able to for the past eight weeks and took points away from the Sunshine Georgies at their home ground.
The Cannons, making a late run for the Premier League finals, pinned the Georgies back in the second half after falling behind from a free kick in the 34th minute.
The pressure paid when a Georgies' defender handled the ball in the area and Jerry Karpeh stepped forward to score from the penalty spot.
The Cannons had more chances in the remaining 26 minutes but had to settle for a point, the first Sunshine has given up at home in two months.
It was a good result to end a frantic week for the Oakleigh side, which had seven players sick with flu at one stage or another.
Most were able to start the game but coach John Anastasiadis had to use his bench liberally as they ran out of legs.
The Cannons could have taken all the points, with a Trent Waterson effort catching the woodwork with the Georgies defence in tatters. Other chances fell to Karpeh, whose close control always bothered the home team.
The Cannons are very much part of a logjam for a top five finals spot. Dandenong Thunder, which suffered its first loss on Saturday to Hume City, has cleared away at the top of the ladder, but only four points cover second spot to Oakleigh in eighth.
The Cannons will want to make the most of their match this Saturday against bottom-placed Preston Lions to make sure they are involved in the action at the pointy end of the season.
