Winning charge against Dragons

28 Jul, 2008 12:13 PM
THE Oakleigh Chargers cemented their spot in the finals after defeating the Sandringham Dragons on Saturday.

After a close contest, the Chargers kicked the final two goals of the game to win by seven points.

Kicking with a slight wind in the first quarter, the Chargers started well, despite some inaccurate kicking.

Onballers Billy Burstin, Jayden Hoegel and Michael Thompson gained a lot of the football and provided plenty of scoring opportunities.

Small forward Josh Scipione used this to his advantage, and a couple of early goals assisted the Chargers in gaining a quarter-time lead of three goals. The Dragons fought back hard in the second quarter, as they controlled the flow of the game.

Fortunately for the Chargers, halfbacks Harry Croft and Seb Henderson continued their terrific seasons, and denied the Dragons many scoring opportunities.

A couple of late goals to small forward Jayden Hoegel assisted the Chargers' cause, and allowed the their side to be in striking distance at the main break.

Both teams worked hard after the break, and it became a close game.

First-year players Jack Ymer, Josh Muling, Mitch Woods and Daniel Hogan rotated through the midfield and gave the Chargers plenty of run and drive. Late goals to Scipione and Hoegel gave the Chargers a seven-point lead at the final break.

Kicking against a slight wind in the final term, the Chargers looked in trouble when the Dragons kicked the first couple of goals.

However, state players Xavier Gotch and James Strauss lifted their work rate, and started to get possessions around the ground.

Billy Burstin moved forward, and he kicked two decisive goals late in the game.

Scores: Oakleigh 4.6 7.6 12.14 12.14 (86) Sandringham 1.5 7.10 11.13 11.13 (79). Oakleigh goals: Hoegel 3, Scipione 3, Burstin 2, Woods Kennedy, Clarke, Croft. Best: Burstin, Hoegel, Croft. Thompson, Woods, Muling, Strauss
