TAC Cup: Late goal puts Oakleigh Chargers ahead

06 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
OAKLEIGH Chargers forward Tim Golds kicked his side into the TAC Cup preliminary finals with a goal in the dying minutes of their elimination final against Sandringham Dragons at Visy Park in Carlton last Sunday.

Golds took a pack mark in the goal square and converted a shot from point-blank range to wrestle the lead from the unhappy Dragons, who led for much of the day.

The Chargers won 9.16(70) to the Dragons 10.8(68).

Chargers regional manager Stephen Conole said his team sparked up in the final term when the game was there to be won.

"Everyone lifted their work rate and that made all the difference in the end.

"We got a lift from everyone from our experienced top age players to our bottom-aged players and in the wet, heavy conditions it got us over the line."

Conole said Tom Gordon and Andrew Gaff led the way in the last term and bottom-age stars Alex Browne, Dustin Harris and Dom Tyson were big contributors to the win.

"The Dragons got the jump on our guys at the start and held a two to three goal lead for much of the day right up until the final term.

"Those final minutes were pretty hard to watch. The goal came at just the right time because they didn't have very long to try and get the lead back.

"The boys came good at the right time of the game.

"While we didn't get much rain, the ground was still very heavy because of the downpour the day before."

Conole said the Chargers would focus on their recovery, which started soon after the match ended.

"They went straight to the pools for a recovery session. It was a very hard game."

The Chargers face either Northern Knights or Gippsland Power at Visy Park on Saturday. Spectators get free admission to the game.
