WITH three rounds remaining, Clayton is a game clear of Oakleigh District in the race for the Southern Football League division 2 minor premiership.
The Clays are on top of the ladder with 52 points ahead of the District on 48 points. But the second-placed District has a superior percentage of 191.15 to 169.42.
The ladder leaders have the chance of boosting their percentage with their last three home and away games against cellar dweller Lyndale, ninth-placed Black Rock and seventh-placed Caulfield.
Oakleigh has a slightly harder run home with its last three games against fourth-placed Murrumbeena, fifth-placed South Yarra and Ashwood, which is eighth.
The Clays peppered the goals with 12 scoring shots to one in the opening quarter of Saturday's match against Skye but were shockingly inaccurate kicking four goals, eight behinds to lead by 26 points at quarter-time.
Oakleigh stretched its lead to 37 points at half-time, and to 38 points at three-quarter time before moving into top gear in the final term, booting seven goals to one to win, 20.15 (135) to 9.9 (63).
Clayton captain Richard Szersyn was unstoppable, booting seven goals, and was one of eight goalkickers for the Clays.
Second-placed Oakleigh held off a determined third-placed Highett to win 8.11(59) to 5.14(44). Highett jumped Oakleigh in the opening quarter, kicking three goals to one to lead by 13 points. The District fought back to lead by eight points at half-time.
Both sides wasted chances in front of goals, and with the defences on top, goals were hard to come by with both sides managing a goal each for the quarter.
Joshua Wright kicked three goals for Oakleigh and Matt Sheehan, and Paul Fermanis kicked two goals each.
Mt Waverley has the division 3 minor premiership sewn up with the Mountain Lions sitting top of the ladder, 18 points clear of Sandown, with three games to go.
The Mountain Lions increased their percentage to a staggering 345.02 after thumping Cerberus by 117 points, 24.15(159) to 6.6(42), led by Andrew Meredith with 11 goals.
