Oakleigh pays for inaccuracy

22 Sep, 2008 11:52 AM
THE Oakleigh Chargers were defeated by the Murray Bushrangers in the preliminary final at Princes Park on Saturday.

After trailing narrowly at the final break, the Chargers could not hold off the Bushrangers and went down by 10 goals 7.16 (58) to 14.12 (96) in a disappointing end to the season.

The Chargers had first use of the wind and, as has been the problem in recent weeks, inaccurate kicking was to prove costly.

With Luke Shuey, Xavier Gotch, Matt Kilpin and Dan Hannebery dominating the stoppages, the Chargers had numerous forward entries but could manage only two goals nine. In the second term, the Chargers won plenty of the ball but again failed to capitalise.

Tight defence from Michael Thompson, Josh Purcell and Harry Croft restricted the Bushrangers from leading by more than four goals at half-time.

It was much of the same in the second term, with the Chargers creating numerous opportunities but poor finishing proving costly.

Goals to Shuey and Gotch got the Chargers within an goal, but the Bushrangers played some of their best football for the season to win.

Chargers 2.9 4.10 7.14 7.16 (58)

Bushrangers 3.1 9.5 9.8 14.12 (96)

Oakleigh goals: Burstin 2, Shuey 2, Gotch, Van Unen, Nicolopoulos.

Best: Strauss, Shuey, Gotch, Purcell, Thompson, Croft.
