MT Waverley has kept its season alive with a terrific
26-point victory over Hampton in the Southern Football League division 3 first semi-final on Saturday.
The 13.10(88) to 9.8(62) victory showed that the Mountain Lions are playing the type of football required to keep winning in the finals series.
The footy was red hot in the first 30 minutes with neither side able to grab any real advantage. That trend continued into the second quarter and the Mountain Lions got their noses slightly in front to take a two-point lead into the main break.
The Mountain Lions took the ascendancy with four goals for the third term, but Hampton threw everything at its opposition early in the final quarter.
The Mountain Lions were able to weather the storm with two goals to seal the match.
Jarrod Wilkin was superb for the victors, while Jacob Mennan and Danial Pearce were also important contributors. Randolph Newman slotted two goals.
The Mountain Lions will play the loser of this weekend's second semi-final between powerhouses Doveton Eagles and Skye.
In division 2, Oakleigh Districts learned that finals are a completely different ball game, going down by 64 points to South Yarra in the qualifying final on Saturday.
The Oaks were made to look helpless in the 16.16(112) to 6.12(48) drubbing.
By half-time the result was virtually decided after a dominant second-quarter display by South Yarra. The Oaks were second to the ball and had no answers for their fired-up opposition.
Darcy Eaton and George Mason tried hard up forward with two goals each, while Grant Pitts and Dean Higginbotham worked hard for four quarters. The Oaks will play the winner of yesterday's elimination final between Highett and Murrumbeena.
