FORMER Sydney Swans premiership midfielder Luke Ablett won't be returning to Mulgrave this season.
Ablett has told new Lions coach Ryan James he will not be part of the line-up.
Lions president Ron Gladman said Ablett may play low level amateurs football or other less serious football with friends.
"Ablett and Ryan James have a very good relationship and he has told us he won't be playing serious football this year."
The Lions hope the recruitment of former Lions midfielder Adam Gee along with other returning players would help mentor their young midfielders.
The Lions will host a family night at Mulgrave Country Club on Friday at 7pm.
Gladman said the night would include appearances by former Collingwood star Peter Daicos, Hawthorn midfielder Luke Hodge and former Mulgrave junior, now Western Bulldogs rookie Lin Jong.
Gladman said tickets were $40 for adults, $30 for under-16s, $100 for a family of four and $60 for a special father-son ticket with finger food and drinks at bar prices.
He said tickets were available by calling him on 041282476 or emailing ron.gladman@ programmed.com.au.
