CLAYTON couldn't celebrate the renaming of its ground in honour of life member Jack Meade with a Southern Football League division 1 win against Tooronga Malvern on Saturday.
In an emotionally charged day, the Clays started promisingly but were let down by their inaccuracy, booting just one goal from six scoring shots to the opposition's three goals from five scoring shots.
A seven-goals-to-three third quarter gave Tooronga a winning lead, and despite Clayton booting four goals to two in the last term, Tooronga went on to win 16.10(106) to 11.12(78).
In division 2, seventh-placed Oakleigh District had a percentage-boosting win against ninth-placed Moorabbin.
The Oaks set up their win with a seven-goals-to-two opening term and led by 41 points by half-time, and went further ahead with another seven goals in the last term to win 21.27(153) to 8.9(57). Dan Kiellerup, James Casini and Michael Guillemain kicked nine goals among them and were among the 12 goal kickers for the Oaks.
Inaccuracy cost Mt Waverley any chance of a win against second-placed Doveton Eagles in a three-point thriller in division 3.
The fourth-placed Mountain Lions had seven more scoring shots than the Eagles but went on to lose 8.19(67) to 10.10(70).
