'They just didn't meet the requirements expected of senior players.' - Scott Hunter
WAVERLEY Blues players have a clear choice: keep losing and fall to division 3 or lift and stay in division 2.
Rowville thumped the undermanned Blues by 136 points in their Eastern Football League match on Saturday.
Blues coach Scott Hunter said relegation was now a real possibility after the loss pushed his side to a 1-5 win-loss record to be equal bottom with Wantirna South.
"The boys have to decide what they want to do," Hunter said.
"We had a heap of injuries during last round and still put in a good effort. Today we were nothing like that.
"They just didn't meet the requirements expected of senior players."
Blues captain Matt Watts heads the club's injury list, which also includes senior players Robert Hartfield, Michael Millier, Greg Hindson and Luke Johnson.
Hunter said that, despite the injuries, his players "lacked character" against the Hawks, giving up eight goals to none in the first quarter and kicking only three goals for the day.
"We still had 22 players on the field," he said. "We just weren't good enough."
Forward Thomas Harley was one of the few Blues to trouble the Hawks, kicking a goal and taking a couple of impressive contested marks.
Hawks full forward Cody Morris led the carnage with 11 goals - six in the first quarter - while Nathan Hicks, Scott Wilcox and the rest of the Hawks midfield streamed through the middle with little deterrence. The win took Rowville from fifth place into second, behind Lilydale on the division 2 ladder.
In division 1 action, Mulgrave put in a fighting performance against reigning premier Noble Park, despite losing by 90 points.
The winless Lions led at quarter-time and took the match up to the Bulls before they pulled away in the second half with seven goals in both the third and fourth quarters. Lions key forward Adam Booth kicked seven goals to be the best player for his side, while Nigel Winterton and Cohen Howell were also strong.
Luke Mann matched Booth's efforts with seven goals, while Trent Robertson and Steve Kemperman were the best players.
The Bulls host East Burwood this Saturday for their annual Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Shield match at Pat Wright Oval, Noble Park. The two clubs will play for the annual shield with club volunteers also fund-raising for the Blue Ribbon Foundation on the day. The match will be their only meeting this season.
A police helicopter is booked to land on the oval prior to the game unless it is needed for an emergency.
After the game, the Blue Ribbon medal will be awarded for best on ground player.
