THE Southern Dragons finished off their first season in the Southern Football League in style, defeating Dandenong by 24 points on Saturday.
Before the season started the Dragons were considered to be the easybeats of the competition, but the new kids on the block ended up with a total of five wins for the season, showing they have plenty to work with for next season and beyond on the back of the 10.7(67) to 6.7(43) victory.
Dragons secretary Searn Ear said: "It was a much-needed win for us after a couple of bad losses. It was a really good way to finish off the year for our club."
Roman Zemlinsky was terrific up forward for the Dragons with three goals, while Pangngha Chhiev and Jason Yap were important for the winners.
In division 1 action, if Clayton had not given Cheltenham such a massive head start, it may have been able to cause an upset after going down by 23 points.
The Magpies were behind after a dominant opening 30 minutes from Cheltenham, and despite their best efforts they were never able to claw back the deficit in the 10.17(77) to 7.12(54) loss.
In division 2, Oakleigh Districts had an unexpected stumble before the finals commence next week, losing to Black Rock by 38 points.
The Oaks finished in third spot on the ladder and secured a double chance in the finals series. They lost 14.15(99) to 9.7(61).
Next week, Oakleigh gets a chance to turn that losing form around when it takes on South Yarra in the qualifying final at Clayton.
When these sides met last the Oaks came away with an impressive 56-point victory, and will be no doubt be looking to replicate that result.
In division 3, Mount Waverley turned Saturday's 86-point victory again Cerberus into an important tune-up before next week's final.
The Mountain Lions were never threatened at any stage after slamming on nine unanswered goals in the opening term in the comfortable 17.22(124) to 5.6(36) hiding.
Next week, Mount Waverley will be in for a much bigger challenge when it takes on Hampton in the elimination final at Heatherton. Last time the two sides played the Mountain Lions lost by just one straight kick.
