SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
SPRINGVALE Districts has broken through for its first win in division 1 after thrashing cellar dwellers Highett by 73 points on Saturday.
It was also a historic day for young Demon Jackson Sketcher, who at 16 became the youngest player to have pulled on the senior jumper for the club.
Sketcher is also a talented all-round cricketer with Springvale South and won The Journal's Junior Cricketer of the Year award two years ago.
The Demons jumped the Bulldogs with a four-goals-to-one opening quarter, and put the result beyond doubt by slamming on seven goals to one in the second term on the way to winning 13.21(99) to 3.8(26).
Brad Heuvel was unstoppable up forward, booting four goals, and Gavin Vassallo kicked three.
Neil Sjostrom and John Charles provided the Demons with a multi-pronged attack, kicking two goals each.
Clayton kept in touch with the four after a hard-fought victory over a spirited Chelsea Heights, 7.9(51) to 7.7(49).
The Magpies are sixth and one of three teams on 12 points separated by percentage with fourth-placed Cheltenham and fifth-placed Tooronga Malvern.
Trailing by a point at half-time, Clayton hit back with three unanswered goals in the third term, and despite being outscored in the final quarter, hung on to win.
Captain Richard Szerszyn led by example with two goals, while Mick DeGeorge with two goals was the only other multiple goalkicker for the Magpies.
In division 2, Ashwood won its first game of the season, defeating Lyndale 10.7(67) to 6.8(44).
A five-goals-to-one first half set up Ashwood's win, led by co-captain Dale Carroll with five goals.
The Magpies have broken free of cellar dwellers Hampton and Lyndale, which are yet to win a game.
Oakleigh District moved to third on the ladder after defeating Hampton 13.6(84) to 4.7(31).
Vice-captain Paul Fermanis has emerged as one of the best forwards in the competition with another five-goal haul, while Jarrod Clayton chimed in with three goals.
Division 3 ladder leader Mt Waverley continued its unbeaten run, defeating the lowly Dandy Demons 10.14(74) to 6.4(40). Paolacci and Leask kicked two goals each.
