LESS than two goals separated Oakleigh Districts and Heatherton throughout Saturday's division two clash, but it was the Tunners that held on to record a three-point victory.
Much of the game was played in close quarters, and the Districts would be disappointed they did not come away with the points in the 12.10 (82) to 11.13 (79)
loss.
Oaks coach Andrew Morwood said: "It was a good game, and very tight right from the start''.
Heatherton forward Brent Williams proved the difference, kicking nine goals. He had seven at half-time, and Morwood gave 18-year-old Elvis Alimovski the task of stopping Williams, which he did with great success.
Paul Fermanis was fantastic, clearly the Oaks' best player. Darryn Sinclair also turned in a great performance.
Oakleigh sits in fifth place on the division two ladder, and should fancy its chances of defeating Moorabbin next week.
In division one, Clayton pounded Highett into submission, winning by 110 points on Saturday.
Clayton kicked nine unanswered goals in the second quarter, setting up the 21.18 (144) to 5.4 (34) trouncing.
Highett had the lead at quarter-time but did not kick another goal until the final quarter, such was Clayton's dominance.
Clayton had 13 individual goalkickers, with Davor Rajic the spearhead, kicking four goals. Brett Crofts also kicked three.
David Roberts was Clayton's standout player, though many of his teammates had the better of their opponents. Clayton sits in fourth place on the ladder, and would be confident of defeating Springvale Districts at home next week.
In division three, Mount Waverley pulled away after half-time from a persistent South Yarra, winning by 39 points.
Leading by just one point at half-time, Mt Waverley played better football in the second half in the 15.17 (107) to 10.8 (68) victory. Tim Fulton had an outstanding day for Mt Waverley, kicking three goals in his best on ground performance, while Cameron Kirkup also kicked three.
Mt Waverley remains unbeaten at the top of the division three ladder, and takes on Canterbury next week.
