CLAYTON cemented top spot on the Southern Football League division 2 ladder by kicking a club record score against cellar dweller Lyndale on Saturday.
The Clays had an amazing 55 scoring shots to the Pumas' six in kicking a record, percentage-boosting, 36.19(235) to 2.4(16) led by skipper Richard Szerszyn with 11 goals.
Nine unanswered goals in the opening quarter set the tone for the match. Clayton booted a further seven goals in the second quarter while Lyndale could manage only a goal for the first half.
A 10 goals to one third term stretched the lead to 156 points, and at the final siren, the difference was an embarrassing 219 points.
Corey Pearce kicked four goals and was among 14 goalkickers for the Clays, who are a game clear and ahead on percentage of Oakleigh District, which had a hard-fought win against fifth-placed Murrumbeena.
Oakleigh won 14.8(93) to 9.19(73) after an eight goal to nothing opening quarter blitz. The District led by 24 points at half-time. The Lions roared back in the third, but the margin was 30 points at three-quarter time.
The Lions won the last quarter, kicking two goals to one, but their slow start proved costly in the end.
Aaron McKenzie booted four goals and Daniel Saldanha three goals for Oakleigh.
Division 3 premiership favourite Mt Waverley suffered a rare defeat, going down to second-placed Hampton, 9.11(65) to 10.12(72).
The Mountain Lions suffered their third defeat of the season on the back of six goals to four first half by the Lions.
The ladder leaders fought back in the third term to trail by 12 points and in a low-scoring final quarter, which produced a solitary goal, were unable to bridge the gap. Mt Waverley is on 52 points, the same as Murrumbeena, but is way ahead on percentage, 231.61 to 136.80.
