 Chargers lack firepower

Chargers lack firepower

21 Jul, 2008 11:07 AM
THE Oakleigh Chargers went down to Gippsland Power on Saturday.

On a tremendous afternoon for football at Morwell, the home side jumped the Chargers and played an entertaining first quarter.

While the Chargers had captain Mat Kilpin and vice-captain Xavier Gotch back from VicMetro duties to give the team a lift around the midfield, the Power forwards dominated the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the Chargers work hard and played their best footy for the day, creating many scoring opportunities. Harry Croft was moved to half-forward and was providing a terrific target.

He was well supported by running half-backs Heath O'Farrell, Seb Henderson and Daniel Hogan.

Ruckman Pat McMahon gave the Chargers first use of the ball and, except for some inaccurate kicking, the Chargers may have been level at the main break.

The second half saw the Power again lift their work rate all around the ground.

The third quarter was to prove decisive, with the Power kicking two late goals to go into the final break with a four-goal lead. The final quarter saw the Chargers again hitting back hard.

There was an early goal to Josh Scipione, and a goal to Harry Croft gave the Chargers hope.

However, the Power steadied and late goals gave them a convincing win.

The Chargers play the Sandringham Dragons at Warrawee Park on Saturday, starting at

11am.

Gippsland Power 5.2 7.4 10.10 16.16 (112) d Oakleigh Chargers 0.3 3.7 6.8 8.11 (59).
