Blues win first in a thriller

25 May, 2009 10:16 AM
MONASH Blues celebrated Andrew Hickey's 150th game with a thrilling four-point win over Old Geelong, securing their first victory of the amateur league season on Saturday. The Blues had first use of the ball through Jim McKenzie's dominance at the centre bounces and gained the early lead from goals by Ben Robertson and George Smyth.

Old Geelong fought back to take the lead in the second quarter but a goal on half-time by Kade Collins reduced the margin to two points. McKenzie continued his good form to kick the first goal of the second half and put the Blues back in front. Leigh Waldron booted two quick goals to stretch the lead to 14 points.

Old Geelong rallied and kicked unanswered goals early in the final quarter but Justin Waldron cut the lead back to points before Collins snapped truly to give the Blues their first win, 11.8(74) to 10.10(70).

Monash Blues' reserves were defeated by Old Geelong 7.4(46) to 16.14(110), the under-19s lost to Hampton Rovers 4.6(30) to 21.13(139), and the Club 18 defeated Marcellin 10.13(73) to 9.17(71).
