IT'S hard to believe six months have passed since Noble Park came so close to winning the division one premiership.
Former Hawthorn player Kris Barlow is Noble's new coach this season and he has his group primed and ready, knowing that Balwyn has signed some big names.
After a season in the competition, Balwyn has reportedly dished out plenty of dollars to build a team more than capable of claiming the 2008 title. Yet it counts for little until the runs are on the board.
Balwyn's recruits include Patrick Bowden (Richmond), Rowan Nayna (Port Melbourne), Joel Smith (Hawthorn), Nick Smith (Box Hill) and Tim Walsh (Western Bulldogs).
Wild rumours of player payments topping $400,000 at Tigerland continue to surface, although such whispers usually prove to be greatly embellished. Nonetheless, the signs are ominous for all opponents, Barlow and crew included.
Such has been the talk circulating about Balwyn and its team full of former AFL talent, it seems a unique form of pressure has fallen upon the big spenders. Anything less than a premiership for the Tigers will be seen as a failure. Full stop.
Perhaps such pressure of the touted heavyweights will work in Noble Park's favour. Surely a role as the hunters rather than the hunted will sit comfortably with Barlow.
Having replaced Shane Burgmann as senior coach, Barlow is well versed on another fancied opponent, that being his former club Vermont.
The Eagles were the toast of the town last September, much to the misery of Noble Park, but both clubs are more than aware that the task ahead this time around is a tough one.
East Ringwood is also expected to again hit more highs than lows, but beyond the leading quartet there is unlikely to be a fairytale to be found. Put it down to four the flag will go to Balwyn, Noble Park, Vermont or East Ringwood.
Scoresby could loom as the favourite for the consolation prize of fifth spot, ahead of Blackburn and a sliding Lilydale, while Donvale and East Burwood may find themselves battling for the wooden spoon.
The Bulls are not without change, and some significant ones at that. Ben Logan (Bonbeach) and Daniel Kennedy (Bonbeach) have moved on, as has Luke McConnell, Vic Currie, Ziggie Alwan (Norwood, South Australia) and Jeremy Everett (Pakenham).
On the upside, players joining the Bulls include Andrew Gilbert (Eastern Lions), Shayne Allan (Port Melbourne), Dean Kelley (Port Melbourne) and brothers Jarrod and Robert Kemperman (Beaconsfield).
Some say change is as good as a holiday. It's refreshing, but will it be enough to stop the fierce approach Balwyn has taken to winning its first EFL premiership? Time will tell.
