AFL: Stingrays forward heads pre-season rookie draft

13 Dec, 2011 11:48 AM
DANDENONG Stingrays forward Brett O’Hanlon headlines the south-eastern Melbourne players to win AFL places in the league’s pre-season and rookie drafts held today.

O’Hanlon, from Edithvale-Aspendale, was taken by Richmond with pre-season draft selection and will take a place on the Tigers’ senior list in 2012.

The strong-marking forward was a certainty to be selected in the rookie draft but was scooped from the pool after the Tigers’ original target, former Collingwood midfielder John McCartney, was surprisingly selected by Port Adelaide.

Fellow Stingrays Darren Minchington (St Kilda) and Piva Wright (Richmond) were taken in the rookie draft.

Morrish Medallist Alex Benbow of the Stingrays missed selection but Stingrays coach Graeme Yeats believes the tough onballer will make his name in the Victorian Football League and could eventually earn an AFL place.

Former Hawthorn and Noble Park player Beau Dowler also missed selection despite training with St Kilda in the past few weeks.

Mulgrave and Oakleigh Chargers midfielder Lin Jong was taken by the Western Bulldogs.

Mulgrave insiders have previously described Jong as having ‘‘cat-like reflexes’’ when attacking the football although he will need to add some weight to compete at AFL level.

Another former Charger, Dylan Orval, was taken by Adelaide.

Orval, a 192-centimetre utility, comes from Rowville and Caulfield Grammar.

Frankston VFL player Mark Baguley also scored a rookie place with Essendon.

Norwood key forward Leigh Williams has spent the lead-up to the draft training with Melbourne and he must have impressed the Demons as he was rewarded with a rookie spot.

Williams has been among the leading goalkickers in the EFL division 1 over the past couple of seasons.

Eastern Ranges’ Max Warren was picked by North Melbourne with one of its rookie picks.
