No playing, just perseverance for gun young rider

MAZENOD College's Jack Cummings puts his meteoric rise down to hard work.

Cummings has followed his father and former racing cyclist Mick's example and within two years in the sport, is already one of Australia's top junior riders.

There's no shortage of commitment to training.

The Year 10 student hits the velodrome at Carnegie and Caulfield Cycling Club for four-hour stints three nights a week.

On his 'nights off', he'll pound out more kilometres on the road.

He has obviously taken to heart the main message from his Victorian Institute of Sport coach Hilton Clarke - "just as long as you put in the effort, you can get where you want to be.''

His career highlight is winning two silver medals in the individual pursuit and scratch race and a bronze in the 500-metre time trial at national junior titles in Sydney this year, but thinks he could have done better.

In February, he also clinched Victorian junior titles in the under 15 time trial and individual pursuit.

"I think I could have improved more at the nationals.

"If I train more and more, I should get better and better.''

His dream is to join a European professional cycling team and compete in endurance events such as the prestigious Tour de France.

One suspects it won't be lack of hard work that'll stop him.

Sports Star of the Week nominees are always sought. If you know someone who has achieved or coached at a high level, contact the Journal at journal@fairfax.com.au or by calling 9238 7777.
