WITH finals quickly approaching, reigning premiers Cavaliers are in the process of confirming their position at the top of the ladder in the Southern Cricket League Menzies Shield following the completion of the first day's play of round 9.

Batting first, Cavaliers declared at 8-272, with CUCC Kings struggling to finish at 6-75 in reply.

Fourth-placed Glen Waverley hit the highest score of the day by piling on 7-347 against Glen Waverley Cougars.

David Sheean compiled 110 not out while Chris Filer finished with 87.

Mt Waverley Catholics, whose strength has been their bowling, chased leather against Oakleigh District Footballers, who finished with 5-225.
