Record-breaking veteran bats on

MT Waverley batsman Robert Bartlett might be the oldest player on his team, but he is shown no signs of slowing down after breaking the club record for the most runs in a season.

The 36-year-old captain of the senior team now has his sights set on breaking his own record this season.

Bartlett said that while his fitness wasn't what it was, he still enjoyed wielding the willow on the weekend.

"Team sport is always a good way to keep yourself fit and keep yourself young at heart," he said.

"I still enjoy playing the game and helping out the young kids as much as I can.

"I've met a lot of good friends and had a lot of good mates. The senior team now, for me, is more to try and give the club some success and pass on as much as I can to the young kids coming through."

This season marks Bartlett's second year back with the club where he started playing cricket as a nine-year-old.

Last year, he broke club records for most runs in a season (642) and highest individual score (173 runs against Altona).

In 2003-04, he tied for Premier Cricket's Jack Ryder medal with former Australian player Adam Dale. He has played more than 260 premier cricket games and spends his summers playing in England.

Bartlett said he would continue playing for as long as possible.

"I most definitely encourage people to stick to sport. You've got to have a healthy lifestyle and team sport is a good way to maintain that and to interact."
