NEW Hawthorn-Monash University captain David Alleyne believes his side must get better at the middle overs of each innings following his side's loss in its opening Premier Cricket one-day game on Saturday.
Despite a strong start from Hawks bowlers, who kept Ringwood to under 60 runs in the first 20 overs, the visitors kept wickets in hand and took control in the middle overs with a 137-run partnership between David King (116) and first-drop Joe Loorham (68).
That partnership allowed the Rams to post 5-257 from their 50 overs. The task proved too much for the Hawks bats and they were bowled out for 115 in 35.4 overs.
Alleyne, who comes to the Hawks after a long career in English country cricket, said his side showed promise and now had a clear vision of what they needed to improve.
"This game gave us an indication of what we need to do to get better. I'm very happy with what we have to work with at this side," he said.
"We made an exceptional start to keep their runs down in the first 20 overs but they were able to occupy the crease and with those wickets in hand could bat positively at the end."
Change bowler Simon Black (2-66) and newcomer Aldren Kerner (2-77) were the main wicket-takers for the Hawks bowlers although debutant left-armer Alex Jones (0-32 off 10 overs) repeatedly beat the bat in the early overs.
The Hawks batsmen didn't have the best of days with Dean Gunawardana making 30 batting in the middle order.
Alleyne said his side had to improve its bowling and fielding next match and the Hawks batsmen had to stay at the crease.
"Some of the wickets today didn't come from great bowling; they came from poor shot selection and hitting to the wrong places.
"Our batsmen need to bat positively from the start and bat in a way which fits their role in the team. We will improve on those areas as the season goes on."
On Saturday, the club also unveiled its new electronic scoreboard, featuring a full digital display along with wicket and four-six graphics that provide light entertainment following boundaries or dismissals.
The Hawks face Dandenong at Shepley Oval this Saturday and then host Fitzroy-Doncaster at Monash on Sunday. Both matches are one-day games.
