Premier Cricket: Hawks cave in to Geelong

06 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
HAWTHORN-Monash University lasted just 35 overs on day two of its Premier Cricket clash with Geelong before giving up an outright win on Saturday.

But Hawks coach Keith Jansz made sure his side got some more time on the park, putting his players through a 90-minute fielding and fitness session soon after the Cats made the 29 runs they needed to take the outright win at home.

The session was completed in front of the Cats players celebrating their win and preparing for the one-day grand final, which was played yesterday.

The Hawks only just missed taking first innings points on day one, dropping an easy catch when the Cats were eight wickets down.

But on day two the Hawks batsmen failed to stay in and were bowled out for 77 in 31.2 overs. Veteran batsman Craig Entwistle (14) was the highest scorer before the Cats quickly chased down the 29 remaining runs in three overs, although Hawk youngster Daniel Rogers snared one wicket.

Jansz was clear in his criticism of his players, saying a number of his players weren't up to Premier Cricket standard but were given games to develop their talents.

"Let's be honest. There are players in the side who are playing Premier Cricket but not up to Premier Cricket standard," he said. "It's a privileged opportunity and our players should take nothing for granted."

"We have a young side so you have to make sure you don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

"Geelong bowled well but didn't do anything special. We just weren't disciplined enough."

The Hawks host Carlton for a two-day clash at Monash University starting this Saturday at 11am. The game will conclude the following Saturday.

■ Richmond scored an important home win over St Kilda in their Premier Cricket clash at Central Reserve, Glen Waverley, on Saturday.

Chasing St Kilda's 195 the Tigers finished 299 all out with Graham Manou making 64 and Ryan Carters 62 not out. In response the Saints made sure the Tigers couldn't take outright points making 0-37 before both captains called time on play just before the tea break.

The Tigers play Prahran next Saturday.
