Hawthorn batsmen falter in run chase

25 Jan, 2010 10:59 AM
INEPT batting cost Hawthorn-Monash University any chance of posting its third win of the season after going down to Carlton by 42 runs on Saturday.

Resuming at 2-60 chasing the Blues' 196, the Hawks lost two early wickets. Elias Karageorgiou couldn't capitalise on a promising start and was out for 19, while the other overnight batsman, Josh Henry, was out for two soon after playing a loose shot and the Hawks were in big trouble at 4-56.

Rohan Wight, who is a quality player but yet to deliver, was starting to enjoy the pace of the flat Carlton wicket before he was dismissed for 37.

Sixteen-year-old Josh Hillier steadied the innings taking 44 balls to get off the mark but was dismissed for eight. The game was all but over at 6-115 but captain Ben Cookson held up the Blues and looked solid in compiling 23.

Cookson was leading by example but his gutsy innings ended in a questionable decision after he was caught down the leg side.

The adage of when things go wrong, they keep going wrong rings true for Cookson. As hard as he is trying, things just have not gone his way with the bat. Cricket can often be cruel.

The Hawks batted their 90 overs but were all out for 154. A little more scoring intent at certain times may have turned the Hawks' way and they are now 17th and face a battle to avoid the wooden spoon.

Hawthorn seconds lost outright by 10 wickets, while the thirds and fourths each lost by five wickets.

In better news for the club a full house attended the Hawks' 'Debt Demolition' evening last Monday. More than 120 people packed into the Novotel to listen to former Hawk and Test triple centurion Bob Cowper, who travelled from his Monaco residence to attend, and relive memories with Hawthorn football and cricket Team of the Century member Ian 'Liberty' Law. Just on $30,000 was raised.
