Hawks star notches up the big prize

19 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
HAWTHORN Monash University batting tyro Dale Tormey has finished a stellar season by being named the first quarterly winner in this year's Journal Victorian Community Sports Star of the Year Awards.

Tormey wins a $100 gift voucher from Diadora, sponsor of the awards.

The 20-year-old left-handed opening batsman won the award after a break-through season that included his debut century, 758 runs at an average of 50.53, and inclusion in the Premier Cricket team of the season.

The Hawks' young gun also put his name up for Victorian selection next year after coming second in the Ryder Medal, finishing a vote behind veteran St Kilda skipper Graeme Rummans.

Tormey, who was named the Journal Sports Star of the Week earlier in the year, is also a more than handy right-arm medium pace bowler, taking 16 wickets.

Despite attempts by several clubs to lure the state's most promising young batsman, Tormey has committed to stay with the Hawks next season.
