BASKETBALL
PASSION and commitment to basketball have led Highvale Primary School student La Andre Du Toit to his dream of representing Victoria.
La Andre was recently selected to be part of the School Sports Victoria under-12 basketball team to compete in the national championships in August.
Assistant principal Anthony King said the school was proud of La Andre.
King noticed La Andre's talent and nominated him to try out for the state team.
"It's really great for him to be selected; basketball is his passion.
"He's very excited to be part of the team."
King said La Andre was dedicated to training to improve his skills.
"It's very rigorous.
"He trains three hours every Sunday for the state team; he can be a bit tired on Monday mornings."
The School Sports Australia championships will be held in Darwin from August 7 to 14.
King said the school was working hard to support La Andre with the costs associated with playing on the state team, which could exceed $3000.
To raise money the school will hold a basketball-themed casual day with a gold coin donation.
"La Andre will be running basketball games for the other students," King said.
