WAVERLEY Reds catcher Grant Karlsen is looking to dominate the Vodafone State League, having claimed the Victorian Winter Baseball League's most valuable player award.
This is 24-year-old Karlsen's second league title, having
claimed the prize in 2005. In a career spanning almost
20 years, Karlsen has played baseball in the US and Japan. In 2003 he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies to play with their minor league affiliate.
``Seeing how the game can be played and the extraord
inary things some people can actually do on a baseball field was amazing.''
Like many other minor league players, Karlsen didn't
experience the glitz and glam of the major league circus.
``It's very strenuous playing in the minors _ you're lucky to survive. Once I had $10 left (for the week) so I bought three pizzas to freeze to have for dinner all week.''
Working as a development officer for Baseball Victoria,
Karlsen is keen to help clubs recruit and retain junior baseball talent.
``Live baseball [on free-to-air television] and the return of the Australian Baseball League should help with
attracting juniors to the sport.''
