Action aplenty on 'our' big day

21 Jan, 2008 03:51 PM
DIVERSITY is the name of the game for community groups coming to the Australia Day party this Saturday.

At the Monash Civic Centre, SBS general manager Mike Zafiropoulos in his Australia Day Ambassador's address will share his thoughts on being an Australian.

The centre will also host traditional flag raising and citizenship ceremonies with feature performances by the Oakleigh City Band and the Monash Chorale.

About 30,000 music and cultural lovers are expected at the two-day Globe to Globe world music festival in Namatjira Park in Clayton South this weekend.

The annual festival includes fireworks, exotic cuisine, East African and Tibetan monk showcases, Latin dance classes, Bollywood entertainment and African drumming workshops.

Also on Australia Day, Jells Park will host a Waverley Bushwalking Club trek, followed by sausage sizzles organised by the Rotary Club of Waverley and Maltese La Vallette Association.

Other highlights include dance classes, sugar art, historical and woodworking displays in Glen Waverley and Mt Waverley.

Monash Mayor Paul Klisaris said he was proud to oversee his first citizenship ceremony for 80 new Australians on Saturday.

"Australia Day is a day to come together and celebrate what's great about being Australian.

"The City of Monash is encouraging residents to get out and about in their community on Australia Day."
