ASHWOOD resident Monique Lisbon hopes to help survivors of childhood sexual violence with a book about her own experiences.
Ms Lisbon, 40, said she began writing the book to help in her own healing process after many years of abuse as a child.
In her book, Fragments of Home: Piecing Life Together after Childhood Sexual Abuse, Ms Lisbon shares her story of sexual abuse by a trusted caregiver.
The content, a mix of autobiographical essays with reflections at the end of each chapter, is accessible to those who are largely unfamiliar with the subject of abuse and trauma. The book also comes with a full-length CD of songs about abuse written and performed by Ms Lisbon.
Her book has been described as an invaluable resource for survivors of childhood abuse, friends, family members, therapists and other professionals who support them.
Ms Lisbon said she was not afraid to share her story in print after giving talks on the subject for more than 10 years.
"I hope other people can use this book to help them through their own journeys. Inevitably when I give talks, people come up afterwards and share their story. A lot of people have said they would love to be able to have someone who can sympathise with their situation. I've tried to do that in the form of a book."
