Swing returns to disabled children

17 Dec, 2007 09:27 AM
A SWING for disabled children in Jells Park, which was closed after sustained vandalism, was back in action last weekend.

The $40,000 Liberty Swing had been removed by park rangers in October after vandals tampered with the locks on perimeter fencing and with the swing itself.

Chief district ranger John Nankervis said the swing and fence locks had been reinforced and the site near the Oaks picnic area would be patrolled by rangers after dark.

But he said it was not possible to "vandal-proof" the swing or move it from its easy-to-access location to a more "secure" site.

"We could do patrols all the time, but [the vandals] come out at all hours ... it's an ongoing problem in parks."

He said even after the swing's temporary removal, parts of the perimeter fencing were stolen.

"It's incredibly disappointing for this to happen. There's enough information to know that it's for disabled kids."

The swing was installed a year ago and disability user groups were provided with a key.

When it was removed in October, user groups were appalled that the swing had been continually vandalised.

Last week, Cr Ryan Brown, a member of the council's disability consultative committee, said access to play equipment was an important issue.

"I call on the thugs vandalising the equipment to think of people with a disability."
