MR Waverley's Professor David Frederick Story has been granted a Medal of the Order of Australia for his contribution to medical education and research in the field of pharmacology.

He has aided the therapeutic regulation and development of evidence-based Chinese medicine as an academic discipline. Professor Story said half of all Victorians used one or more forms of complementary medicine at least once a year, but many were not aware it had the potential to cause side effects.

"People have misunderstood its effects, believing it must be safe because it's natural. The evidence-based movement is to identify which are effective and what they can be used for," he said.
