THE Oakleigh Basketball Stadium will undergo a significant upgrade following the announcement last week of $200,000 in funding from the Federal Government.
The funding, part of the $800million Community Infrastructure Program, aims to support jobs and boost local economies by building and renewing community infrastructure.
Federal Chisholm MP Anna Burke said she was delighted to see funding announced so quickly for the stadium redevelopment.
"This is an important project for Oakleigh and without federal funding it would have remained in the 'too-hard' basket.
"Local communities are feeling the effects of the global financial crisis so projects such as these are vital to generating construction activity and delivering much-needed infrastructure."
The upgrade of the stadium will include enhancements to the outdoor surrounds, water conservation
initiatives, landscaping, walking paths to the stadium and upgrading of off-street car parking.
More than 3600 projects have been submitted nationwide under the first round of the Community Infrastructure Program.
Ms Burke said Monash Council would soon receive a contract for the funding from the Government, which she encouraged them to sign and return quickly so the funds could be released.
