MONASH Mayor Charlotte Baines has encouraged residents to give generously to those in need this Christmas.
Cr Baines, who was elected mayor on December 9, said it was easy to get caught up in the mad whirl of the festive season but it was important to take a moment to consider those who might not be as fortune.
"Many of Australia's largest welfare organisations, including the Salvation Army, the Smith Family, the Brotherhood of St Laurence and Charity Link are collecting money and gifts, so I urge all of you to give generously to those in need this season."
Cr Baines said Christmas was a wonderful time of year to celebrate the diversity of Monash - a municipality with nearly 40per cent of residents born overseas.
She said she looked forward to the challenges in her role as mayor during 2010.
"The city's future is looking very bright. During the year the council has worked hard to attract a wide range of quality commercial and residential opportunities to the city."
